Canadian CPA's: For your eyes only....the anatomy of a lying lawyer: Elizabeth Cowie v Robert Gubbins

Ms. Cowie is general council for the CPAO and Robert Gubbins is director of admissions. When the Marshall Sone scandal hit their desks they had a decision to make: cover-up the fraud by Sone and subsequent negligence in handling the credit card charge back OR tell the truth. They chose the former. That's how lies start. To defend the lie they would go to any lengths including perjury. Their jobs and reputation were on the line. They were under fire from the executive leadership to bury the fraud to avoid litigation. They were scared.

$250,000 in legal expenses later and six years of litigation have been a heavy burden for the pair who wake up every morning and look at a liar in the mirror. Cowie has taken several leaves to cope and begged the Law Society to stop investigating her deplorable conduct. That's what lies do-they destroy people and eat at their souls until they can't take it anymore. Barr retired in disgrace and Cowie and Gubbins will suffer a similar fate.

Justice has many faces and many arms and eventually the truth will shine through.

It is time for the leadership to break their silence and discipline those involved in the Sone fraud and cover-up.

CRA investigations result in 53.5 years of jail sentences

Tax fraud and evasion represent the most flagrant instances of non-compliance with tax statutes. During 2012-2013, 71 income tax and GST/HST investigations were referred to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) for prosecution, compared to 120 cases in the previous year. As a result of referrals to the PPSC (current and previous years), 128 cases resulted in convictions for tax evasion or fraud in 2012-2013. The courts imposed $9.95 million in fines and 53.5 years of jail sentences. These convictions related to revenue loss of $32.6 million. The CRA obtained convictions in 96% of cases prosecuted.
